You can create a character that tries to make their way through many lands. The game takes place in an alternate universe based off of Richard Garriott’s game, shortly after the events of his third game in 1983. It was branded as “Ruins & Riches” to pay homage to games like classic TSR Dungeons & Dragons, from which much of the methodology originates.

Some of the features one can see in the pre-alpha build are present in the final game, such as the minimized stat screen, music, and some building locations or layouts, but other features are far from their final version, such as the skill window and whatnot (which actually pops out as a separate window to the client itself). While there's not a lot going on in the pre-alpha, it's an interesting little piece of history and definitely of interest to those who love/loved UO. In theory one could host this for many players, but realistically without a lot of backend development you wouldn't want to. Its' about 13 megs and you can have it running in less than a minute. I stumbled upon this Reddit thread through some random UO Discord server and this fellow has uploaded the pre-alpha Ultima Online as well as the server package needed to get it running so you can connect to your self.
